THE BURNING WHITE, which is now available in trade paperback, is a finalist in the 2020 Dragon Awards for Best Fantasy Novel (including Paranormal).
The Dragon Awards were established by Dragon*Con in 2016 as a pop culture award for outstanding works of speculative fiction in literature, movies, television, and gaming. They’re voted on by fandom, and winners are announced during the Saturday of each Dragon Con. This year the awards will be presented during the virtual Dragon Con on Saturday, September 5.

We’ve been holding on to this bit of fan art for a while, so we could really highlight it’s awesomitude ( or fantabulousness, if you prefer). Author Ben Galley animated the cover of THE BURNING WHITE (it’s a 10-second video, so you’ll need to press play):
Galley sent us a GIF as well, but note that it’s lower res and doesn’t look quite as cool:
Thanks for bringing this beautiful color to life, Ben!
Every year, Goodreads runs an awards competition. Basically, Readers’ Choice Awards. I’ve been a finalist before (thank you!), but as Goodreads has tweaked which books are counted into which genres, it’s gotten significantly more difficult for my kind of work to land on the list. When hugely-popular crossover writerslike Nora Roberts (400 million copies sold!) show up in your pool of competitors, a win simply isn’t going to happen.
Which is fine. Ms. Roberts works incredibly hard and has earned every fan she has.
Additionally, this year, THE BURNING WHITE published just a couple weeks before the end of the eligibility period. And as you may have noticed, THE BURNING WHITE also happens to be a rather lengthy novel, so it didn’t surprise me in the least that I didn’t appear on the longlist.
But then something happened that did surprise me.
Some of you wrote me in.
ENOUGH of you wrote me in that I made the Semi-Finals–despite not even showing up on the longlist!
Very, very cool. Thank you.
Now, two things: one selfish, one not. First, I’m not winning this thing regardless, but it WOULD be sweet to be a finalist again, especially if Joe Abercrombie isn’t.
Second, even if you don’t vote for me (which is totally fair, so long as you don’t vote for Joe), the list is a great place to find books that OTHER readers are loving. Not just in fantasy, but in all genres. So it’s worth clicking through to find some great books for your TBR pile–and look up readers’ reviews of ones that sound interesting.
This round of voting ends Sunday, November 17, so check out all the Semi-Finalists HERE. And thanks again.
We shared a video of Brent answering some audience questions on Facebook Live a couple of weeks ago. It was recorded at Powell’s, during the book launch event for THE BURNING WHITE.
Many of you were sad to have missed this, since it aired around 7:30pm PDT–which was 10:30pm on the east coast, and something like 3:30am in England.
We heard you, and we’re sharing the recording here… Now. Like, right now. See? It’s right there! ↴
Also, the video has been polished a bit, so there’s no dizzying camera turn ten seconds in, and the high-pitched ringing is mostly gone.
This week was Weeks Week with the fine folks over on The Legendarium podcast. They shared several glorious Weeks-themed issues throughout the week. Fill your earholes forthwith:
A gift for those of you who prefer audiobooks over print.
Now the dulcet tones of the inimitable Simon Vance:
You can pre-order all 39 hours and 4 minutes of this aural bliss from Hachette Audio or Audible.
Also, just so you know, we’re going to have a fun little treat to share with everyone every Monday – Friday for the rest of October. Stay tuned for more Lightbringer goodness!
Brent had a great time talking to Daniel Greene yesterday–about books, and writing, and YouTube, and literate potatoes*…
Wait, not potatoes. BookTubers!
Sit down with these two guys on your lunch break, leave an upvote and a friendly comment, subscribe to Daniel’s YT page, and of course make sure you’ve pre-ordered your copy of THE BURNING WHITE!
*c’mon, y’all, this is funny! Potato = tuber, YouTuber > BookTuber > potato that reads…. Why am I the only one who thinks I’m funny?
